About FLHSMV Tracking
2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and the 80th anniversary of the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The organization supports the safety and reliability of traffic through world-class customer support, education, and regulation. The Florida Highway Patrol is working hard to keep Florida safe by efficiently issuing driver’s licenses, tags, and titles and administering the FHP. The agency’s primary goals are to make it easier for everyone to stay safe on the roads.
When Florida was initially introduced in the 1900s, there were no restrictions on vehicle use on public roads. In 1905, the provincial state legislature passed a bill that served as a model for modern transportation and safety regulations. Car drivers are required by law to register their cars, install security systems, and obey certain basic rules of the road. Customers had to pay $2 to the State Department to have their car license and identification card with the car.
By 1941, a new law required all first-time drivers’ license applicants to pass vision, road sign, traffic rules, and driving tests. 1946 was an eventful year for those in the transportation industry – not only was the first comprehensive driver’s license examination program developed but Florida’s first examiner’s guide was published. The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) was created in 1969 as a result of President Claude Kirk’s merger of the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Public Safety. Colonel H. Neal Kirkman was elected by the State and Council on August 15, 1969 as the first Executive Director of the FLHSMV.
Florida is better now thanks to FLHSMV, which serves more than 20 million people and more than a billion tourists annually.
